I offer several levels of editing, from basic proofreading—the final pass before a book’s publication, to catch those last, lingering errors—to three tiers of feedback-oriented editing to help you develop your skills as a writer. For more details on each of these services, including pricing, see below.

All services are billed at one of three rates, depending on the level of work involved. Applicable rates are calculated upon a project’s conclusion.

PROOFREADING

Proofreading is typically the final stage in the publication process. Intended to catch lingering errors after all major rewriting is complete, it is focused on technical elements of the text only.

Proofreading includes corrections to:

  • spelling, punctuation, and grammar
  • syntax
  • word usage

Where appropriate, it provides guidance on:

  • clarity
  • consistency

All changes are made via the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word. You will be returned two copies of your manuscript: one with changes tracked, and one with all changes manually incorporated into the document for ease of use.

A free proofreading sample of up to 1,000 words is available. Please send me an email to learn more.

Low proofreading rate: $2.95 per 1,000 words
Middle proofreading rate: $3.20 per 1,000 words
High proofreading rate: $3.45 per 1,000 words
All projects are billed to the individual word.

COPY EDITING

Copy editing is the penultimate stage in the publication process. It should be undertaken when major rewrites are complete, but additional sentence- to paragraph-scale changes may still be necessary.

As well as the corrections and guidance provided in the proofreading package, copy editing also offers comments throughout the manuscript highlighting:

  • repetition
  • clunky or awkward phrasing
  • unclear sections

and provides advice on how to address them.

Also included is a separate file with detailed notes undertaken throughout copy editing, providing additional comments where necessary on:

  • plot, including logic holes or execution issues
  • characterization
  • reader engagement
  • recurrent elements which may require further balancing

All edits are made with the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word. Comments are added in margins using the Comments feature. As with proofreading, your edits will be returned in two files: a copy of the manuscript with changes tracked, and a copy with all changes incorporated. Both files will include comments made during the copy editing process. The additional file of detailed notes will be sent as a .DOCX.

Low copy editing rate: $3.95 per 1,000 words
Middle copy editing rate: $4.35 per 1,000 words
High copy editing rate: $4.75 per 1,000 words
All projects are billed to the individual word.

A follow-up proofread is recommended after copy editing to quash new errors that may be introduced if you make further alterations based on my feedback. This is available at a capped rate of $2.20 per 1,000 words.

LINE EDITING

Line editing is an alternative version of the copy editing package. It includes all the same files and feedback as above, however whereas copy editing will note clunky or problem areas and suggest refinements, under the line editing package I will also implement these refinements myself, rewriting the text as and when necessary.

Low line editing rate: $4.95 per 1,000 words
Middle line editing rate: $5.60 per 1,000 words
High line editing rate: $6.25 per 1,000 words
All projects are billed to the individual word.

A follow-up proofread is recommended after line editing to quash new errors that may be introduced if you make further alterations based on my feedback. This is available at a capped rate of $2.20 per 1,000 words.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

Developmental editing is the highest tier of editing. It is designed for the author who wants a fully guided process to refining their book, focusing primarily on plot. Thus, whereas copy editing and line editing provide broad feedback on plot elements if necessary—these services might suggest refinements to improve the emotional impact of certain plot threads, for example—developmental editing is a full tear-down and guided rebuild of problem elements in a novel.

Under the developmental editing package, I will discuss with you the alterations I believe are necessary to improve your book. From this dialogue, and based also on your own feedback, I will provide a new chapter-by-chapter or scene-by-scene breakdown of what needs work, what should be removed, and what should be added to maximize the impact and efficacy of your novel.

Line editing is available for $7.50 per 1,000 words. It is billed to the individual word.

A follow-up copy edit is recommended once your rewrites are complete, and is available at a discount of 10%

The first invoice for all editing projects is billed according to the lower rate. The second invoice, payable upon the project’s completion, accounts for the total remaining fee, which may be higher than the initial payment depending on the level of work required.

Note that in the case of developmental editing, your final guided outline will be released after the balancing payment has been made.
