I offer two editing services, providing multiple levels of detail: proofreading, and copy editing. Both are available in American and British English. For more details, including pricing, see below.
Proofreading is typically the final stage in the publication process, and the service I most commonly provide to independent authors. It should come after all rewrites are complete, and only technical elements of the text require scrutiny.
Proofreading includes corrections to:
- spelling, punctuation, and grammar
- word usage
- paragraph structure
Where appropriate, it provides guidance on:
All changes are made via the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word. You will be returned two copies of your manuscript: one with changes tracked, and one with all changes manually incorporated into the document for ease of use.
A free proofreading sample of up to 1,000 words is available. Please get in contact with me to learn more.
Proofreading is available for $2.75 – $3.30 per 1,000 words, and is billed to the individual word.
The first invoice for all proofreading projects is billed according to the lower rate. The second invoice, payable upon the project’s completion, accounts for the total remaining fee, which may be higher than the initial payment depending on the level of work required.
Copy editing is the penultimate stage in the publication process. It should be undertaken when major rewrites are complete, but additional sentence- to paragraph-scale changes may still be necessary.
As well as the corrections and guidance provided in the proofreading package, copy editing also offers comments throughout the manuscript highlighting:
- clunky or awkward phrasing
- unclear sections
and provides advice on how to address them.
Also included is a separate file with detailed notes undertaken throughout copy editing, providing additional comments where necessary on:
- variance within the text
- reader engagement
- recurrent elements which may require rebalancing
- repeated errors
All edits are made with the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word. Comments are added in margins using the Comments feature. As with proofreading, your edits will be returned in two files: a copy of the manuscript with changes tracked, and a copy with all changes incorporated. Both files will include comments made during the copy editing process. The additional file of detailed notes will be sent as a .DOC.
Copy editing is available for $3.80 – $4.50 per 1,000 words. It is billed to the individual word.
The first invoice for all copy editing projects is billed according to the lower rate. The second invoice, payable upon the project’s completion, accounts for the total remaining fee, which may be higher than the initial payment depending on the level of work required.
Due to the depth of the copy editing process, a free sample edit is not available.
